Why do people think and act so differently in response to the same facts or observations?
Behavior is the result of a balancing act between genes and the environment or “nature vs nurture”. Consider your own family where you and your siblings were all raised in the same environment (nurture) yet respond differently when faced with choices (nature}.
Often, when we observe challenges to an individual’s or social group’s cohesion and group behaviors, we frequently overlook a fundamental aspect: the impact of the individual’s social and psychological makeup. The greatest determination on an individual’s choices in response to environmental influences is the individual’s inherited genetic pre-disposition or DNA.
Guided by their unique genetic makeup, individuals respond differently to environmental factors. There are four distinct genetic predispositions, each have their own strengths and liabilities.
Individuals will intuitively migrate to one of the above predispositions; although based on circumstances, may demonstrate some characteristics across the spectrum as a means of coping or thriving in a diverse environment. Recognizing these genetic traits in ourselves and others will improve the chances of bridging the gap between unity and collaboration.
